I violated the first principle of scientific research tonight: change only one
variable in the experiment and observe the results. I've been meaning to
upgrade the station for some time, and finally got around to it yesterday and
today. However, I changed a lot of hardware and software all at once, and the
result was predictable pandemonium. New logging computer (a used Intel NUC box
with Win10 after years of Win7Pro on a refurbished Dell desktop), new CW keying
interface (Mortty v2), new USB to RS-232 adapter/octopus and the QRO change to
100 watts meant reverting to my K2 with outboard KPA100/KAT100. I had to
remember how to use the K2........ Last time I tried QRO in NS I found lots of
RFI to the logging computer, and tonight was only marginally better. Time for a
more controlled experiment...........
Nothing heard on 15 tonight, and I was surprised to struggle on 20 with the QRO
setup. 40 and 80 were good. Apologies to all - I realized that I forgot to
copy the NS function key definitions from the old computer and clearly botched
it in recreating them from memory - sent everyone's call twice and the
changeover from RUN to S&P is messed up - boy, did I QLF tonight.
I hope to iron out some of the QRO gremlins before NA Sprint this Saturday!
The only benefit of QRO is handing out the NH mult to more folks.
