Comments:
This was our first rover effort. We were 2m/70cm FM only while in motion, and
we were able to use 6m/2m/70cm SSB/CW/FT8 when stopped. There were some good
moments, but a lot of challenges as well.
We learned the hard way that a clear horizon is much more important than high
elevation. Our first stop was at one of the highest points in southeast
Wisconsin, but we were surrounded by trees and struggled to make any contacts at
all. Our second stop was 200 feet lower in elevation but with a clearer
horizon, and we were much more successful. We made more than half of our
contacts on FT8, which meant we worked stations we wouldn't have heard on phone
or CW, but we also had to drag computer gear with us.
We used an FT-991 with a quasi-homebrew dipole attached to a PVC pipe frame for
6 meters, an A144S5 5-element Yagi on 2 meters, and an A430S10 10-element Yagi
on 70 cm, all on a 10 foot tall tripod.
32 QSO points x (6 grids on 50 + 3 grids on 144 + 2 grids on 432 + 3 grids we
operated from) = 448 points
