Comments:
John, W6LD, and I did a 2-op M/2 effort to maximize our club contribution. We
had at least one active radio for all but 50 minutes of the contest. The two of
us were both operating at the same time for about 16 out of the 48 hours. In
addition to sleep time I took time off for family birthday celebrations for two
of my grandsons, one on Saturday and the other on Sunday.
A failed test of serial numbering by band just before the contest start,
followed by futile searches through menus, and finally scouring documentation,
resulted in our first QSO logged at 0009. 15 meters at the start was a big
disappointment with no Asian stations heard. We worked one JA on 15 in the
contest.
A big thank you to everyone that spotted us and others on the bands. I made a
point of spotting anyone I heard that wasn't already in our bandmap.
We had a few short runs into Europe on 20 but they didn't last long. While
beaming that direction we were surprised by the numbers of VE7, VE6 and VE5
stations that called. As in ARRL DX SSB, a poor EU opening from the east coast
on 15 resulted in massive crowding on 20, making it difficult to be heard in EU
from the west coast.
Some of the nice runs on day one did not materialize on day two. Static crashes
on 40 and 80 on Saturday evening kept rates low. The 15m opening to the eastern
US didn't happen on Sunday morning with just a few Gulf Coast states heard plus
some big guns from further north on backscatter, all stations we'd already
worked.
Despite the poor conditions we both enjoyed the contest and look forward to
better conditions and the opportunity to include more operators in our effort
next year.
