First, huge thanks to Tony, N7DX, for sharing the operating duties last weekend.
Tony is a software engineer and has been working hard on the remote side to
figure out what works best for SSB and CW. Each contest is a learning experience
and moves us closer to that remote operating sweet spot.
Our WPX goal was to have fun, get a full night’s sleep, and let propagation do
what it’s going to do. A string of solar disturbances the last few contests
seem to bullseye right on the weekend, and this one was no exception. That
manifested as a surprising lack of JA activity and reduced Europe on 20m and
40m. It probably didn’t help that the low bands went unmanned most of the
night. But hey, both ops needed their beauty sleep!
A strong wind storm moved in Sunday morning and we lost power for about two
hours in the middle of a good run. It took another 30 minutes to restore the
logs, equipment, and peripherals that a modern contest station needs to compete,
with the added layer of a remote operator. Remember the days of hitting the
power button on the radio and you’re back on the air?
Big congratulations to the ND7K crew and on another outstanding performance! Tim
and his crew have built a very special station in Arizona, and it’s fun to see
their amazing scores while pushing the boundaries even further from seven land.
Well done!
Also, congratulations to the crews at NR6O, KT7E, VE7SZ, and KZ1W on excellent
west coast scores. You all make multi-op look easy, but it isn't. Great job.
That’s a wrap from Camano Island, Washington. Until next time, take care and
thanks to all for the Q’s.
73, Mitch, K7RL
