Comments:
For the last two years, John K6AM has lead Levi K6JO and Tim N6WIN in a M/S from
the ZF1A contest station. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the
switch to remote operating.
Thus far, all of our efforts have been single ops, however, we decided to try
another multi-single, remotely. Marty NN1C managed the team, with Dan N6MJ
driving our operating stratagies, Scott K7ZO bringing his ever fantastic
analytical skills of our previous efforts, and John K6AM proved once again what
he can do with his seekrit skunkworks boxes that we've come to depend on.
A FedEx shipping delay meant that the custom hardware we built for the effort
would not arrive at the station in time for the contest. Andrew ZF1EJ worked
incredibly hard to help improvise some cabling to give us much of the
functionality we desired.
The contest itself was enjoyable, however, we could never quite get 10m to open,
and 15m was spotty at best. NN1C and N6MJ had a fine opening act with a 404
first hour, which we believe is likely a high watermark for remote SSB
operating. By Sunday morning, however, we felt like someone had exchanged our
mighty station for a QRP radio and random wire, with the majority of the signals
very weak.
We are grateful for all the skeds, moves, and stations that called in. Special
kudos to Andrew ZF1EJ who helped immensely with the pre-contest setup, and
enables us to operate. Special shoutouts to Tim N6WIN who lead the ND7K to a
really impressive score from Arizona, and our teammate W9KKN who has
co-engineered our remote operations with Marty NN1C, and was part of the K1IR
team this weekend.
