Comments:
I have always wanted to put in a serious effort in this contest, and still
haven't. A serious effort would be close to 24 hours BIC. But, I managed to put
in a little over 13 hours. I was mostly interested in solving a problem I've
been having with intermittent low receive. I happened in SS, and it happened in
CQWW CW. I narrowed it down to either the T/R relay in my SO2R box, or some kind
of partial short in the phono connectors between the box and amp. Before this
contest, I changed jumpers so the SO2R box changed SO2R box jumpers to use solid
state switching instead of the relay. Not a single instance of low RX. Problem
solved!
Bands Friday night didn't seem all that great. Sigs on 40M seemed to be
attenuated. Still managed to get quite a few mults on 160/80/40. Also got some
TV viewing time in with the XYL to keep her happy. Dogs woke me up at 4 AM for
their middle of the night potty run. I could have resumed contesting then, but
opted to wait until 6AM to get going again. It was nice to see 15M open up for a
while, but missed a number of mults including VE4. Weird because I snagged lots
of VE3's and VE5's. Checked 10M off and on, but no joy.
Kept plugging away most of the day Saturday on 20 and 15, with some late action
on 40 and 80. Had my sights set on a quarter million points, but fell just a
couple RAC Q's and a VE Q short. Amazing how much more the RAC and VE Q's affect
the score vs. plain old non-Canadian QSO's.
I too was called by many 9A contesters. Since the exchange is the same, it
shouldn't matter to the log checking. Not sure what the fuss is about. The 9A
contesters send a serial number, and that is all that is required by the RAC
rules. And, I send a serial number, and that is all that is required by the 9A
rules.
Many thanks to those VE's in rare sections that QSY'd to another band to help me
fill in my multiplier map. Nice to see activity from VY0RAC, VY2RAC, and
VE8GEZ.
