Comments:
Better late than never! Managed to make 446 QSOs from 66 sections in nine and a
half hours Saturday pm/Sunday am.
The previous 160 Inverted-L and Fan Vertical wires had been taken down for tree
removal and trimming in October. Friday night I decided that the weather was
looking just barely good enough to attempt to string up a new 160 meter wire,
but I needed to load new fishing line into the EZ-Hang. In sporadic misty
freezing rain during Saturday's daylight, a new 130 foot Inverted-L (12 AWG
insulated) wire was pulled up over the remaining 60 foot tall maple and pruned
to cover 1800 to 1870 kHz under 2:1 with a 1.2:1 at 1830 kHz, with a DX
Engineering VMN-1 shunt coil over 60 radials each 25 feet to fit the yard. Then,
in Christmas light decoration season, the ambient noise level on the new 160
meter wire registered 20 over S9! Operation was possible using the DXE-NCC-2 and
an Active Vertical as a noise sense antenna, nulling the noise to S0-S1!
Finally, got started Saturday around 5 pm local with a break for pizza at 6 pm.
It seemed like 160 meter conditions were not nearly as good as previous years,
with no Europeans and few west coast stations making it to this Ohio location.
Thanks for the Qs! 73, Rod K8RR
