61% of QSOs via CQ runs. Spent way too much time tuning for needed final few
sections not found in spotted data. After working VY1CO / NT the first night, I
had hoped that a sweep was possible for the first time ever in this event. Each
year, I usually work most of the sections, but have never heard NT on 160
before.
Missed working PAC/KH6. Went QRT several hours before sunrise on Saturday.
Later noticed that only KH6ZM was on - for about 4 hours - starting about 45
minutes after I went QRT. So, I stayed up all night during the second half and
kept checking for KH6 spots and tuning for it, but nothing. This was a real
surprise and bummer, because I have participated in this contest for about the
past 25 years, and normally KH6 is participating. Some years, I have worked
multiple KH6 stations in a single session of this event, and it is usually easy.
What gives with the lack of KH6 top band participation now?!
This was also one of the worst ever for DX. Very little DX heard or spotted.
Only worked C6, CT, CT3, EA, PY, TF, V3, XE, and ZF. A few others that I tried
seemed to be "alligators" on receive. The EU sunrise sweeps did not
result in my hearing hardly any EU - also somewhat unusual
When DX was spotted, I mostly could not copy it due to the loud domestic CQ
machines on the DX frequency - along with QSB. Even though historically most
people said the DX window at 1830-1835 was a bad idea (and now it was
"officially" discontinued), I liked it. In years past, often I could
find and work DX there with low power. In more recent years, the domestic CQ
machines were more frequently camping out in the DX "window" making it
less effective. So more change - not always for the better!
Well, enough of my ranting. As always, thanks for the Qs, Ms, and fun.
Top Band is always challenging and fun.
73,
Gary . K9MMS
