We operated two CQ WW DX SSB stations from a semi-wilderness location W6DOJ and
NC6DX in this CQ WW from the top of a small 5000 foot high mountain in the
Sierra surrounded by the Tahoe National Forest off grid using solar power,
batteries and two small generators. During this CQWW the temperature dropped
from 70 degrees F to 33 degrees F with extremely high winds, trees blown over
and nearby towns having their commercial electrical power shut down. We also
monitored the local evacuation announcements here in California to make sure
that we would be able to quickly evacuate if our area was subject to the local
uncontrolled fires in California. Our nearest paved road was several miles from
our location requiring driving in four wheel drive over a dirt road in a dense
forest. Saturday morning during the CQ WW the evening temperature dropped to 33
degrees F but it warmed up to a toasty 44 degrees Sunday morning. Luckily none
of the fallen trees during the extremely high winds blocked all of our roads
out and all of our antennas made it through the high winds. How high were the
winds? 20 to 45 + MPH. All of our antennas and towers survived the high wind
gusts. We have a video of K6ON taking a break during the CQ WW and walking his
dog Amy on one of our dirt roads in the forest near our antenna locations and a
pine tree blew down less than 100 feet in front of them exciting Bob’s dog!
After the CQWW we took pictures of one of our dirt roads blocked by a large pine
tree and fallen limbs from other trees. After we made it out we discovered that
the surrounding towns had no commercial power, no working traffic lights and no
capability to sell or provide gasoline as they could not operate their gasoline
pumps. K6ON, K6XN and K6YN are all in their 70’s and we all love Ham Radio!
