This was my best September VHF contest so far with 4k more points than my last
year’s score. We had some good rover activity with W9FZ/R-KA9VVQ/R,
KC0P/R-N0HZO/R, N0SPN/R, and W0ZF/R. The rovers accounted for 38% of my 240
QSOs!
I worked W0ZF/R in EN16 on 6m for FFMA grid #467! My 902 system was working
great with the new amplifier N0AKC built for me which bumped me to 50w from 7w.
I managed to work an all-time high on that band with a big thanks to W9FZ/R’s
great setup. Bruce gave me 5 all-time new grids on 902. A new 1296 yagi and
three new runs of 7/8” heliax kept me busy the days leading up to the contest.
I had ordered a 1296 Q5 transverter but it wouldn’t be completed before the
contest so N0AKC loaned me his FT-736R and I was able to get my feet wet on that
band. My 222 totals were down from years past and I suspect some receive issues.
I was able to catch an unexpected FT8 only 6m sporadic Es opening to the west on
Saturday night from 0130-0220z. There was also some double hop present to W6
land. I worked AB0YM/R-DN80, K0GU-DN70, NA6L-DM12, WB7CJO-DN71, W7OJT-DM24,
K5LRW-DM72, KG6IYN-DM12, and N7IR-DM43. I spent some time on MSK144 MS Sunday
morning and worked a few of the east coast big guns. I experienced some Sunday
tropo enhancement and worked out into MI, OH, and IL up to 423 Mhz. At the end
of the contest, I was receiving good signals from SD, IA, and NE.
My best DX on the bands were: 6m-KG6IYN-DM12 (Es-1616 miles), 2m-W9VW-EM79
(Tropo-491 miles), 222-W9FZ/R-EN22 (Tropo-244 miles), 432-KF8MY-EN84 (Tropo-411
miles), and 902-W9FZ/R-EN22 (Tropo-244 miles), and 1296-K0AWU-EN37 (Tropo 201
miles).
Overall, a great contest! See you in January!
73,
Justin, K9MU – EN44
