Comments:
What a great way to spend Memorial Day weekend! My wife was able to make the
trip with me this year to NY and we had a great time just relaxing and enjoying
the country. She did a little work, a little more shopping, and enjoyed some
well deserved relaxation time.
I didn't have any set expectations or scores in mind going into this one. The
only real goal was to push myself and the station as hard as possible for the
entire 36 hours, no matter what! Lots of station preparation went into this one
and this score wouldn't have been possible without all of that work. A hearty
thank you to both Scott, WU2X, and Tariq, N2QV, for all they do. It's really
amazing how their station has evolved in a few short years and I've been so
lucky to be a part of that.
Conditions overall seemed similar to last year. It felt like the high bands
were a little down compared to 2018 but the low bands were slightly improved.
20 meters didn't stay open late into the night like it did last year and the
morning openings were slow to happen and not very deep. Sunday morning on 20
was a blast though with EU, JA, and BY stations calling in all at the same time.
Very few EU were available on 15 this weekend. Most of my Qs on that band were
from stateside.
40 meters from here is just a beast. The band was extremely stable throughout
the entire contest and the run Saturday evening from 2245z to 0630z was
memorable. The band was uber quiet and all of the signals from Europe had zero
QSB. I was ready to go to sleep around 0530z but EU just kept calling. 80
meters was also great during this time into EU. Europe seemed to be hearing
well and there were very few repeats needed.
An unexpected visit from Murphy happened during the peak EU sunrise on the low
bands the first night. For some reason we had some sort of power surge which
caused everything in the shack to shut down. After rebooting all the equipment,
the TS 590 and Green Heron devices wouldn't connect to the computer. After
about 30 minutes, I was finally able to get everything working again but then
decided to go ahead and just burn an hour of off time. That was a painful
decision considering some really nice runs into EU were happening on both 40 and
80 at that time.
This has been a really fun and rewarding contest season for me with wins in each
of the CQWW CW, ARRL CW, and perhaps now WPX CW (still too early to call for
sure). We also had a nice multi op win from Arkansas in the cq 160 contest in
January. The competition is stiff, but that’s what makes it very interesting.
It is unfortunate that KM7W (KL9A) from Eastport, Maine had a technical issue
which caused him to abort midway. We were running neck and neck until then!
We had a great post contest dinner. Unfortunately, WU2X couldn't make it this
time but N2QV was able to get away from his incredibly busy schedule to enjoy
some nice R&R in the country during the weekend. Tariq supplied some great
steaks and my wife had a very nice meal all prepared at 0000z. A team effort
for sure.
