Comments:
One of my favorite contests. Had some family duties that prevented a full-go,
but still felt a little off my game. Missed some of the best times on the air.
The top-line SOAB scores of 3000-1000 are amazing, and the east coast advantage
of the 40 meter "double pointers" is a plus. Congrats to the 3000 Q -
1000 M gang. Really amazing.
Started the contest with two K3 radios and two Alpha 87A amps, plus one old
Alpha 76PA amp on a table as a standby. Lost both 87As during the contest: One
faulted out with high grid current, with one the final tubes going. The other
one had a bearing go bad in the fan and finally sounded like a helicopter was
hovering over the shack. So I ended up SO1R with the trusty 76PA and called a
zillion CQs and did a bit of S&P but in this contest it's CQing that rules
the day.
Forty meters was really noisy to EU and not much fun to operate. The morning
JA/Asia conditions were good, however. Twenty was pretty good, with lots of weak
and ESP signals calling.
All in all, not a great showing here. Congrats to K5PI (at the K5TR station) and
the other regional ops. Nice to have a few little micro QSOs along the say
saying hello to peeps like W2VJN and others. It probably helps to have a
"mult prefix" in this one but it's a gas anyway.
Thanks to CQ and those who run the WPX CW.
73, Jim N3BB
