Strangely enough, as many contests as I play in I've never done the VA QP. This
is probably because I usually get in the Russian DX test but the guys on the FRC
chat page were saying that condx were pretty ratty at the start. So I decided
to get in this Qso party with a little more effort than just fooling around as I
generally do just to give out some Q's to the participants. I also normally
don't do ssb but it looked like the cw activity would be disappointing so up in
the phone band I went. The only Qso party I do any running in is the PA QP so I
just tuned for guys. I heard several counties I needed answering other guys who
were out of state so maybe one of these days I will change that habit on rare
occasions.
Saturday had decent activity and I tried to time the mobiles just right to be
looking for them when they got to a new one but didn't do that right away and
missed a few. W4GO & W3JRD were always pretty easy to find. KJ4OAP was
tough for me and I had to use my dx ears a lot of times but missed him in a few
counties even when I knew he was there but would never be able to copy the
serial number. It seemed Saturday was a bit better for working Kevin but Sunday
until late in the afternoon he was esp a few times. Maybe it's the distance
involved as I'm on the NY border but that is the comparison I heard here. Not
sure what antenna differences there are between those three mobilers are but
Kevin must have heard me pretty good as I think he answered almost every time on
the first call. Maybe I'll have to install an rx ant just for south, hi.
Sunday things thinned out other than waiting for the mobiles to get to another
county. As the day passed by the Q rate passed by too. Thanks to all the VA
home stations but especially to the hard work and driving the mobiles/portables
do to make things more fun for us who just sit at home and play with our toys.
Already looking forward to next year. Maybe I'll throw some CQ's out to dredge
up a few more mults.
