Comments:
This operation would not have been possible without all of the hard work done by
our host, N3HBX. The entire team would like to thank him for letting us use his
fine contest station again and, particularly, for all of his hard work doing
repairs and maintenance.
Just in the last few weeks, John has made the following major repairs:
- Apparent Lightning damage to Hi-Z 4-square receive antenna controller
- Broken support rope for 160 meter vertical array that got tangled in the
lower 20-meter beam on tower 4, breaking the driven element
- Apparent lightning damage to antenna rotor controller
- Over-rotation of one of the towers causing damage to control cabling and coax
feeds
He is still dealing with apparent lightning damage to the rotator controllers
on two towers but managed to point them at Europe for us. Without the
continuing hard work to engineer, build, and maintain his great contest
station, all the fun we have and the scores we make would not be possible.
Thanks, John!
We had a great team this time. Friday night we had W2CDO and KD4D. Ihad a VU
call me early Friday night on 40 meters right over Europe. That was fun!
The sunrise opening on 40 meters yielded a seemingly endless stream of European
stations with single-digit serial numbers. Noise was low and conditions were
great until several hours after sunrise in Europe. We tried to pick up as many
multipliers as we could on 80 Meters and had a few successful short runs on 80
meters.
Saturday night, with K0OO and KD4D, was noisier. The sunrise opening was good
- but not as good as Friday and we had worked a lot of stations. We worked
hard for many of the QSOs, dealing with the QRN and a good bit of QSB.
Saturday, it was fun exchanging insults and progress with WX3B over packet. We
were both motiviated to try to make 100 QSOs before 80 closed Saturday night.
Saturday's day shift was N8IVN and N3QE. We were pleased to have Masa, AJ3M,
join us again at the farm. 15 meters was pretty good for a while and they did
a great job keeping pace with with WX3B.
Sunday's day shift was AJ3M and N3QE. Jim challenged us to try to keep up with
the 15-meter runs on Sunday with K3WI operating his station. The extra
motivation helped us stay focused through Sunday afternoon.
We ask a LOT of European stations whether they will accept QTCs. I wish I had
a recording of an exchange N3QE had with a station in Great Britian. When
asked if he wanted QTCs, the reply was "No, thanks. I'm trying to
quit!" Beautiful....
Due to N3QEs diligence, we actually got rid of ALL of our QTCs - a first for
our M/S efforts on SSB. I have no idea why the computer thinks we had an extra
QSO, but it showed ZERO QTCs to send.
Thanks for all of the QSOs!
73,
Mark, KD4D and the team at the N3HBX station.
