Comments:
Operated 10w in conditions of near-absent enhanced propagation.
The reflector comments and rules discussions helped pass the time on this one.
More work on improving rules for evolving WSJT modes to encourage, not restrict
contesting activity would be welcome. Modes other than JT65A and FSK441 are
being used and need to be able to be identified in contests to allow more QSOs
to occur. ISCAT B is getting to be very popular for MS and ionoscatter. It is
at times sub-audible and can now be run in intervals of 30, 15, 10 and 5
seconds. A digital CQ post should be allowed that can identify call,
frequency, mode, sequence, azimuth and interval. These modes are tricky to
learn and use, but they can be highly effective and add interest to contests.
Newcomers to WSJT and seasoned operators alike have expressed real difficulty
with current rules. The rules have been improved, yet they still can create
confusion and restrict the chances for WSJT QSOs.
If we had had great propagation this year, little of this discussion would
likely have occurred. We would have all flocked to CW and SSB for the fast run
rates and would have abandoned WSJT modes except in the typical, non-enhanced
propagation periods.
VHF contests are still the best contests. The VHF contesting community
and contest sponsors are second to none.
