Comments:
This was supposed to be a casual effort. However, I put in a nearly a maximum
effort, considering this was a phone contest. Got plenty of sleep with 6½
hours on Friday night. Quitting at 05Z was a tradeoff of the low band results
vs being fresh in the AM for the european runs on 20-10 meters. I got another
6½ hours sleep on Saturday evening, quitting at 04Z and getting back on at
10:30Z to clean up on some pacific and asian multipliers on the low bands.
The packet spots were pretty good at the beginning of the contest permitting me
to chase spots at ~100/hr for several hours. Later in the contest, the spots
were fewer and mostly broken calls. The propagation was a bit peculiar this
year. I found I was able to run quite well on my lowest 20M antenna in the
late afternoon. That antenna is just 37 feet AGL. The big stack was between
10-20 dB below the low antenna on receive. On the other hand, I used a 5
element 10M antenna at 150 feet almost exclusively for all the south and
central american QSO's. Most were chasing packet spots and were usually one
call. I suppose that path isn't affected as much by absorption as those to
europe and asia.
All in all, I had a good time. I took my usual 1½ to 2 hours off to attend
Mass on Sunday. It cost me in terms of not cracking the 4 meg plateau, but I
think I made the wise decision.
My thanks to all those who called me and to those that spotted me on the
cluster. I hope to see you all again in the next major contest.
