Comments:
This was quite an experience and a lot of fun. It was the first time I have
operated a remote station, and actually the first time in many, many
years I have operated all by myself. I was having so much fun working loud
stations on 80M that I stayed on too long and forced myself to take off
Saturday afternoon during some high rate times to save the time so I would be
able to get on for a few hours on Sunday. Saturday afternoon I was thinking
that I would like it better if the Classic Category was 36 hours instead.
Thanks to W1UE for spending time with me before he left for Brazil to get me
most of the way there and to WU2X for getting everything to work using N1MM +.
What a wonderful program and thanks to all those who work on that program for
all of us to use for free. A BIG thanks to Tariq, N2QV, for allowing me to use
his fine station.
Operationally, this is not same as being at the station but about as close as
you can get for being over a thousand miles away. Going in, I was skeptical
about mixing radio and the internet. Something just didn't seem right - like
if we are going to use the internet why have radio even be a part of it. Well,
I can tell you that I never thought those thoughts when the contest started and
I heard all the familiar call signs from all over the world and the Europeans
were a lot stronger than they are in Arkansas.
A few notes and things learned:
There is a specific time when all experienced operators will press the CQ
button (and all will press it within a few milliseconds of everyone else) if
nobody calls following a QSO. Of course there is a little latency (half
second) in the audio and it was difficult for me to wait the appropriate time
to press F1. I would estimate there were more than 100 times I pressed it too
early at the same time someone called, causing me to go back to a partial call
or have a repeat. I may have gotten better at it by the time my 24 hours was
gone, but it does take some thought to overcome what has been ingrained as an
automatic response over the years.
The audio is very good, but there is a little jitter and it seemed the faster
the guy was sending the more difficult it was to copy the call sign.
I should have played with the tuning rates on the K3 to see if I could make the
tuning easier. The way it was set up the frequency would move .05 khz minimum
with each twist of the dial. That coupled with a narrow filter which was
necessary due to the crowded bands was not good. I am sure that is something
which can be overcome and not be such a problem. I will use that as an excuse
for my multiplier total not being as good as what I believe I should have
accomplished after spending a lot of time spent trying to find multipliers.
How could I tune every band from one end to the other and never hear 8P5A yet
work KG4 on two bands?
The station at N2QV consists of a 150 foot rotating tower with four 36 foot 2X
Arrays tribanders at 60, 90, 120 and 150 feet. Another 120 foot tower has an
Optibeam four band antenna. That antenna was used for 40 and to turn to
another direction for the high bands. The 80m antenna is a 4 Square. I know
this is in NY but the antennas work very well.
A lot was learned during this experience which I believe would help me do a
better job another time. Looking at the zone multiplier list, I neglected to
work some easy stuff, all of which would have been double multipliers.
I was amazed at the CN2AA operation. I either got lucky or those guys worked
everyone who ever dared call CQ. I never called CQ on 160m but called them
instead. On the other bands within the first few minutes after calling CQ they
were calling me.
Statistics follow.
73. Have a good holiday season.
