Comments:
The conditions were very good - it seems that for the last few years this
contest
has had great conditions but this year was one of the best. Hopefully, unlike
last year,
we will see the conditions hold up on 10 meters for the CQ WW CW and the ARRL
10m contest.
As far as operating the contest goes I could give you a list of excuses but you
know
in total they are not really anything special. They are just all of the things
that
we all have to deal with during a contest. Things like equipment or weather or
physical
or just not being in the now in your head during the contest. The real skill is
over
coming all of these things and making a great score come together at the end of
the
event. So the simple explanation of my effort is that I did not do a very good
job
at dealing with the contest. Or maybe more simply the operator (me) did not
really
show up for at least the first 12 or 24 hours of the contest and likely he was
not
there at others time during the event even if he was physically in front of the
radios.
Now - some operators that did show up and overcome many obstacles this weekend
- my
hat is off to you fellows. I am going to focus on the ones that are in my zone
but
not that near me. W9RE as always putting in a fine score. N9RV with the big 15
meter
score from way out west - great job. N5DX with a fantastic showing. Great job
Kevin.
And N2IC who keeps showing us how it is done from western New Mexico. Steve's
station
is not very big but he knows how to use it and how to do this contest. WOW
what a
great job. While N5DX and N2IC and I are all in the 5th call area I am not
sure that
everyone really understands how far west (read further from Europe) N2IC really
is
compared to me or the K5GO/N5DX station. N2IC is 596 miles (959 km) west north
west
of me and he is 884 miles (1422 km) west south west of N5DX. If you are on the
east
coast of the USA think about what is 884 miles west of you away from Europe and
if you want to operate the contest from that location. Here is one example -
W9RE is
about 820 miles west of Boston, MA. Great going Steve!
As for me, I still had fun, learned a few things about the radio contest and
myself that I hope I can remember and apply during some future contest. The
station worked very well
and I really had very few issues. At the start of the year I decided that I
was going to work on updating the computer setup. I am a TR-Log MS-DOS/FreeDOS
user. I like the program
it does every thing I want it to do and my old DOS computer has been trouble
free. It is
a Compaq 486 that used to belong to WM5R's sister. It came installed new from
Compaq
with DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1. But for all sorts of reasons it was getting to
be time
to move on. I mainly deal with unix/linux/osx on a daily basis for my day job
and
the thought of having to buy and support a Microsoft windows machine just did
not
excite me very much. But I was about ready to move to windows and TR4W was a
leading
the way. But I knew that W9CF had also been working on the TR-Log source code
just
like TR4W but W9CF was doing on linux. I had an older intel mac mini that was
not
seeing much use so I made it dual boot linux and got trlinux running on that
machine
quickly and it worked and well. It was just like running the DOS version but
on
a modern OS with all the features - like networking and USB support. At the
K5TR
station K5OT and I have been using this setup for every contest starting with
ARRL DX
CW this year. and it has been working great. We just added a YCCC SO2R box and
W9CF
has added native support for the YCCC box to trlinux and it is all working very
well.
