Comments:
Thanks again to Randy for letting me pilot his station. No sleep issues this
time. One 20-minute mini-nap (on the bed even) and one 10-minute micro-nap (in
the chair). Both alarms worked FB.
Fun weekend, interesting conditions. Nice to see good conditions "over the
Pole" on both 20 and 15m. Cools mults called in around 12Z on 20m: XV, XU7,
VR2, YB, DU. In retrospect I may have gone to 15m too early on Saturday...may
have picked up a few more mults on 20 and the rate was still decent. Tough
call - there's always the fear that 15m may be punk the next day and it sounded
like it was hopping already. Couldn't have been too bad a decision: rates
Saturday from 10-14Z were 148,201,247,204,156. Went to 15m around 1220Z. The
real issue was that 20m never seemed to have a great opening to Europe later in
the day (18Z and beyond). Or maybe it was lack of sufficient activity.
Signal fading levels on 15m Sunday were severe at times - some stations would
literally disappear during their exchange. I checked and it definitely wasn't
me hallucinating. Hard getting any great rate going Sunday - once 15 and 10
opened 20 became a ghost town (combination of activity migration and increasing
absorption toward noon). Spent a little time betting on a 10m explosion Sunday
but it only produced short bursts of mini-runs into southern Europe - sounded
like it might break open wider than that but never really did. Still got a few
new mults out of it, though.
The issue of stations not signing their call frequently enough was really bad
this time. DX stations: Please - QRZ is not your callsign. There are still
many of us who operate single-op without spotting assistance and we depend on
you to sign your call. Even a one-minute stretch is too long to wait - some of
you were going longer than that. Please sign your call more often - first, it
is one of the ways to operating success. Second, it reduces the chance that
you will be spotted with the wrong callsign. It saves way more time and
produces much better overall results. And above all it marks you as a good
operator.
Thanks to all the DX stations who show up for all the DX contests - without you
there would be no contest!
