Comments:
Had a blast at a four county intersection. Some minor problems.
1. The Tennis Ball eating tree ate two tennis balls that I was launching to get
it to simulate an antenna support. Gave up and put one end of the antenna about
10' off the ground.
2. My brand new "no name, cheepie" generator had a severe gallop, exacerbated
by the on off keying of CW. This caused an overload circuit in the rig to kick
out if I tried running more than about 50 watts on CW, so the signal was doubly
puny. However, it seemed that being on a four county line of Boone, Dekalb,
Ogle, and Winnebago was a magnet at times, especially shortly after a kind
hearted op would spot me on a DX cluster. Thanks to everyone who did this!
Lack of sunspots, plus a low antenna, caused 20 metres to be a dud for me - I
checked several times, and made some contacts two different times during the
day, but nothing like 5 or 6 years ago near the peak of the sunspot cycle. 40
was long skip, with very few in state contacts, but both phone and CW were
productive. 80/75 was the workhorse, it opened earlier than typical. At one
time I was considerably behind in logging when four multi county portables
ganged up on me almost simultaneously!
Weather was beautiful. There were enough trees to shelter from the sun and
wind, and the temperature reached almost 80°F in the afternoon.
Thanks to KN9T and N9GZ for vacating this 4 county corner and suggesting I take
it over. It was very appropriate because this is near Rockford, IL, and I
traveled from the home QTH of Rockford, MI for the event!
