What a great weekend. Completely spent by 2359z Sunday. Went high power to see
what it would be like. I liked it a lot -- much more action. On Saturday I set
a stretch goal of 1 million points but didn't think it would happen. It did.
Then drove for 400 mults, which I didn't think would happen. It did. Then
chased after 1,000 Qs. Another hour and I'd have hit that one, but I guess I'll
save that for next time out.
In January, I ordered an MFJ-1026 noise cancelling box to help reduce the power
line noise from the East, but it didn't arrive. Shop called 12 days after I
ordered to ask ME why THEY hadn't shipped it yet. Go figure. Was not good to
find out the day before the contest that they had never shipped.
As it turned out, dense fog and wet snow both days kept the line noise down
quite a bit and I really enjoyed the quiet for a change. Looking forward to
EVENTUALLY receiving the 1026, though.
Still too many SO2R people stealing my SO1R time making me wait while they mess
around somewhere else after calling CQ or replying to mine. Many who called in
and then halted heard me dump them for another round of CQ this time out. No
more waiting through the long SO2R silence.
Bands were all right considering the SFI=76. 15M was better Sunday than
Saturday here.
20M EU opening at 1700z on Saturday, and 1500z on Sunday (and very strong).
6V7E was strong on 20M both afternoons. Was amazing to hear the activity on
Sunday -- activity from 14055 all the way to 14130. Couldn't shoehorn in
another signal, though most of us tried it anyway. InRad 250hz filter worked
well, but could have used even narrower stuff.
Worked more than the usual half-dozen EU on 40M Friday and Saturday nights but
heard dozens more than I worked. Rigged up the phased vertical array during a
break on Saturday afternoon (1/4-wave spacing, fed at the south with 3/4-wave
line to the north element). Noticed the gain to the north vs. a single
vertical, but still was able to work off the sides quite a bit.
80M was very good for domestic distances both evenings. VE7UF with Jim VE7FO at
the keys gave me the VE7 mult Friday night.
In the final couple of hours I traded W/VE rate in favor of JA/AS multipliers,
which racked up more points per Q on 20M. Worked lots of domestic stations off
the back of the beam, though, which is great.
Finished up with a super 20M JA opening Sunday afternoon, adding many extra
mults. BD4SX was a nice surprise. Need the Asian openings to (in a very small
way) make up for our weaker Western openings to EU and AF. Brett, VR2BG, even
called in though the band wasn't very strong that far along the path. Worked
half a dozen W mults off the back of the beam -- plus Bob, K0RC, who said he
had been chasing me around the band but never caught up to me. Until 2353z.
Happy he found me.
1.15M is a great score for me, considering the 40 and 80 vertical I used this
weekend. When the phased delta loops for both bands are up and running, I hope
to do even better there. Those bands are the keys to higher scores. I ended the
contest with a great big grin, despite a terrible eye-strain headache.
