Comments:
This was my first single-operator all-band ARRL DX CW contest since returning
from New Hampshire to California in 1998. Needless to say, working lots and lots
of Europeans from W6 is not quite as easy as from New Hampshire as N6BV/1 --
even from a superstation like N6RO's! But it was fun to get back into the action
again.
Ken, N6RO, graciously allowed me to use the station, since he had a music gig to
do. For this SOAB effort, I used my well-worn SO2R setup on the same bench where
I normally do 15 meters when N6RO is doing a multi-multi operation.
Just before going out to 'RO Acres, I was very pleasantly surprised to have UPS
deliver a large white box containing a new ORION transceiver that Scott, W4PA,
had managed to spring loose from the factory before the promised March 1
delivery date. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to redo the switch box and
other wiring at N6RO, and I didn't want to risk the overall reliability of the
system by hurriedly cobbling together something. So I fell back to using my two
tried-and-true IC-765s. But thanks, Scott, for that heroic effort (and
congratulations also on your fantastic effort at K5ZD this weekend!) I promise
that I'll get that ORION integrated into the system for the next contest.
Anyhow, the propagation conditions were a little better than I expected, but we
are definitely on the down side of Solar Cycle 23. Perhaps as a tradeoff for 10
meters being mediocre compared to the last few years, 80 and 160 were very good.
I've never heard 80 meters so quiet, with a number of readable signals from
Europe. And about a dozen of them heard me too! Pretty amazing from California,
at least for me.
Here's my rate sheet. Certainly not up to East-Coast standards, but not too bad,
I hope...
