This was a new experience for both operators: for Richard 9M2/G4ZFE, my
co-operator, since he does all his contesting on CW; for me, my first major
contest from a QTH below 57 Degrees North. Having heard all about the conditions
from operators during the contest, and on the reflectors afterwards, I shudder
to think what this event would have been like from my home station.
We could muster a legal 400W on one station and more or less 400w on the other.
On 40 and 80 we used a low trap dipole. The TH3 at 30-something feet worked well
enough on 20m and 10m, but was crocked on 15m. 15m was left with my 'IOTA
expedition' vertical dipole. This actually worked surprisingly well, all things
considered. Although in the center of KL, the station, which is located at the
National Planetarium, has a superb 360 degree location and is electrically
quiet.
LOT of T-storm noise and static on Saturday, especially on 10 and 15m and mostly
the signals were very weak. When the 'average' callers from central and eastern
Eu were mostly S 0.5, it was amazing to hear some well know Contest stations 20
over 9 on 10m at the same time. Some reasonable rates on (GMT) Saturday, but
Sunday was desperately slow. The comments on 40m have been interesting, though
it's been like that for years and it is just the same out here....I was rather
surprised. I sympathise with the regular Asian, and other, contesters who call
loud Eu's on 40m SSB and get ignored. What a mess. We, too, were deaf on 40m.
Low antenna and QRM+++, especially up in the US phone band.
No (or virtually no) QRZeding by 9M2RPN, but OH! WHAT A PAIN IN THE BUTT THE
'LAST TWO' MERCHANTS ARE!
A good time was had by both and we hope we made a few other contesters happy.
Rich and I owe a big thanks to Sangat, 9M2SS, for his hospitality and allowing
access to 9M2RPN.
Best wishes,
Keith 9M2(for a few more hours only)/GM4YXI
