Spend some time before the contest fixing the U.S. beverage that the wild
donkeys broke.
Since I had also ordered a Force12 C19XR tri-bander antenna to have
3 bands (instead of just one) on the 2nd radio, I also took down the 15m
monobander that was connected to the 2nd radio.
Because the C19XR was shipped via ocean freight, there were some delays
before I received the antennas.
I finally received the C19XR late thursday before the contest and I
stayed up till about 4am friday morning installing the antenna
and making sure it worked OK.
Not having an additional tower and since the 60ft Rohn tower already
was filled with antennas at various heights, I installed the C19XR
on top a couple of 20ft galvanized pipes with a top mounted Hygain Rotor.
Once up, the antenna worked like a champ and the SWR was perfect on
10, 15 and 20m from CW all the way up through phone.
The contest itself was a blast and rates were incredible. Due to personal
reasons,I was not able to operate more than 39 hours, but it sure were 39 hours
of high adrenaline rush and continous pileups.
I remember clearly when switching over to 15m on saturday late afternoon.
It was like everone was on 15m. The calls just kept coming one after another
and after the final tally, I had my best hour on 15m with an a peak of 343 q's
and sometimes running even 6 to 9 q's per minute in between.
Best rates were on 15m at 21:11z.
21:11z: 9 per minute (540/hr)
21:14z: 63 per 10 minutes (378/hr)
20:28z: 343 per hour
Total Qs: 6839
Average rate:
142 per hour for the contest
175 per hour for the 39 hours of operation
The 2nd radio worked fantastic, especially when rates dropped below 140 q/h I
had a chance to look for multipliers without getting in the way of running on
the main radio.
Thanks for the q's and for those stations who qsy'd when requested.
