Comments:
WOW! What a blast! This was the first time I have really worked this
contest since about 1989 when I was in college at W9YH. It is also the
first contest I have worked since getting my PA up and running a few
weeks ago (Thanks to all those around the world who congratulated me on
it! I didn't realize it was that famous!). It sure made a HUGE
difference over low power operations in the past. I just have to RFI
proof my shack and house - my stereo turned itself on! No complaints
from the neighbors though.
20M was good Friday night but was really noisy on Saturday morning. So I
went up to 15 which was just fantastic to Europe. Had some really nice
European runs for a while and then went up to ten which was also very
active but nice and QUIET. I could actually hear the weak stations. My
S meter actually rested on 0 during times of receiving no signals! It
helped. Saturday afternoon brought some nice JA runs which I have never
done before. Saturday night got kinda frustrating for a while, but then
I managed to work a T33 and an E41 on 20.
Sunday was kinda slow to start. 20 was OK, and 15 wasn't bad but 10
never took off. I could hear plenty of the big guns but that was about
it. I was hoping that I would start hearing lots of South American
stations on both Sat and Sun afternoons, but never really heard that
many. Usually there are more LUs on the band than you can shake a fist
at. Not this weekend. 20 M ended up being incredible Sunday afternoon.
I had some great runs and a huge one ran for about an hour where I
managed to keep up a QSO rate of almost 80 Qs an hour for a whole hour
(Rarely did I drop below 40 for the whole weekend). All was going
swimmingly until the SSTV guys decided that I was too close to their
precious 14.230 MHz frequency. They decided to move up a couple of KCs
and start clobbering me. I held on and only diminshed the Q rate
slightly for about an additional half hour. One guy had the cajones to
tell me I was interfering with him! I lost my cool at that point! All
it would have taken was for them to politely ask me to move and I very
likely would have (later in the afternoon a guy from a net farther up the
band *nicely* asked me to QSY due to the net - I did.). I eventually
left that frequency as I needed to take a break anyhow.
OK, enough rambling! I am psyched that the Tri-bander category exists as
guys with just modest stations can compete.
Highlights: Having a V5 station work me on 2 different bands and working
a TA station for the first time ever.
This was great fun and I look forward to more next year!
73,
Jon
