Equipment Description: TS-570D@5W, 40M Full Wave Loop
Soapbox: Had to be in Kentucky for my father's birthday
so my operating time was limited to non-family times
(i.e. when all were asleep!) My brothers helped me
string up a full wave loop for 40 from two giant 90' oak
trees. That put the loop lobe NW-SE and it turned out to be
very directive. Worked great for W4/W9 but missed three easy NE
mults and three W mults as a result. Got the antenna up just as we
were one hour into the contest. Started out on 10 where my 5W worked
well for about 30 Q's and then migrated to 20 and 40 where few could hear
me in the rock crushing signals. Got back on after midnight and 40
worked the best with only one to three calls working for S&P. Tried
the other bands, but the QRP and the antenna just resulted in
frustration. Wound up with most of my contacts on 40 and discovered
that even a QRP can have mini-runs on Sunday afternoon when everyone
is hunting new ones with their 2d radio.
Had a continuous problem with CT 9.37 stuttering on CW. My sincere
gratitude to all of you who patiently pulled me out of the noise.
I was really impressed with this TS-570D. I was worried since it
had the 1.8 filter installed, but the DSP just sliced the bandwidth
down to whatever I needed.
Great to hear so many FCGers, especially the rock-crushing signals
of K1TO and K4OJ (both S9+30 on 40) and WC4E, N4BP (S9+20). Worked
all four of you within a 10 minute period on 40! Also got NU4Y and
K1PT. Any others?
