My favorite contest of the year (although SSCW is quickly
becoming an equal) has come and gone and I did not accomplish
either of my pre-contest goals. I missed a SWEEP by not
working PR on Sat. when I had a chance and missed 1000 Q's but
other than having a QRM headache had a ball!!
The test started out extremely well with 113 Q's the first
hour but I had only 4 other hours that I was able to break
50 Q's. As usual, 20 meters was wall to wall, 15 was sporadic
and on 40 & 80 it was very difficult to find a run freq.
Late Sunday afternoon Murphy paid me a visit. I had a
successful run going on 40 meters when my radio decided to act up.
The SWR needle started jumping so I thought something was wrong
with the antenna. I switched to the 40M sloper but the problem
continued. Fortunately the problem was only on 40 and proved
to be intermittent as I was able to work a few more on 40 later.
At 00:00Z I was still missing VY1 and PR for a sweep and was
130 Q's from my goal of 1000. I was burdened with the choice
between looking for the missing mults or trying to find a run freq.
and get the needed Q's. I basically split the remaining time
between the two and found good ol Jay (VY1) calling CQ on
20M. I pointed the beam PR way and searched 20M from top to
bottom. I heard two KP2's but not a peep out of KP4. My friend
across town, KK5GT,(the ham formerly known as AC5BR) worked a sweep
with 100 watts to a G5RV 20' above terrain. GO FIGURE!! I hope he
enjoys his coffee next year in his sweeps mug.
This contest was a TRUE TEST of operating skills and
determination . It was also a prime example of why OUTSIDERS
consider us nuts. (Perhaps with good reason)
Thanks to all who participated and especially all who are in
my log.
73 es See you in CQWW CW this weekend.
Good Guy Award goes to N4UK for working me on 80 meters. We had
already worked on 40 but he was kind enough to give me SC on 80
for WAS.
