K7FR SS CW Score B K7FR 66 EWA

1133 Q x 78 Sec = 176,748 Pts 24 hours

Who said CW is dead?

Distribution:

80 294 Q Slopers at 60, 180, 300 degrees, 100'
40 203 Q 40-2 CD at 102'
20 393 Q KT-34XA at 111', TH6 on seperate tower at 55'
15 243 Q " "

Commentary:

IT IS SAID: It always helps to have a goal.

Mine was to break 1,000 Q's since this has been long considered one of the
rights of passage to big-gun-ship (or at least upper middle class-dinghy).
I finally played up to my expectations. I love CW contests.

Got up home Friday night from a business trip to Seattle to find three
frozen kids. Seems the techno-terror computer thermostat croaked. Bright
and early Saturday I went off on the 100 mile round trip to get a new one.
One of the problems of living where there are no CC&R's is that there are
few of the trappings of civilization either.

Home at 2025Z with new one. By 2045 I'm out at the tower with the RF-1
retuning wires for CW. Battery is dead! Back to the house to get a new
one......have to rob smoke detector. 2059 finds me fixing ground system
inside of equipment box at tower. 2110....I know the contest starts at
2100!....fire up amp, computer and radios. Amp remains strangely quiet.
MONDO PANIC ATTACK! Find breaker off in panel....reset, all OK.

Find 15M alive and decide to start there since my antennas play really well
there. Find KP4TK knocking them down. Hit F4....NADA..keyboard is dead! Do
a power off-on to reset. All is OK. Work TK and start into the fray.

Next station requires a fill on the CK......first of VERY many.....old
trusty AEA M-1 keyer not functional. Sit back and seriously contemplate the
omen's being presented here. Find the RCA plug is loose. If it's twisted
just so all is ok. Back at it.

20 did well until it faded. Should have moved to 40 sooner but in past
years 40 stunk. The rate was ok on 40 but ran out after 73 Q's. Went to
80. In all my years I have never seen 80 play so well. Last year I had 43
Q's on 80, this year 294!!!! The slopers work!!!

40 did well too but 15 was the surprise band. Huge runs of 1,2,3 & 5's.

My apologies to the following:

KC7NEV - Sorry I couldn't complete the contact. It was rude of me to start
CQ-ing in your face but it was that or QSY because of the JERK that started
CQ-ing over the top of you.

THE JERK (above) - Sorry I lost my composure and sent QRL JERK. I would
have much preferred a volley of photon torpedo's.

W5WMU (N6TR) - Humblest regrets about CQ-ing on top of you....hit wrong
key......

To all who wanted a fill on my CK - I changed my check to 66 to reflect my
original novice roots. Seeing that TR-log has the fill ability from prior
contests explains that......66 is easier to send too.

Hat's off to:

KH6/W1WEF my only KH6.

CI2AWR ditto VE2.

AA7BG - WOW that's a really good score!

73 Gary K7FR

"....antenna waves are burning up my radio."
