The contest story:
After we won the CQWW M/S category in WWDX CW 94 and SSB 95 I was not sure
that propagation would help us again so much as it was happened
in the last two years. We well know that we have no chances against the
great M/S stations from South America and Caribbean.
In this situation is not easy to find the concentration that we need
to do a new great effort, but our goal has been always a good places in EU;
anyway propagation helps us again and we found unbelieveable conditions on
high bands, just a little below the last year so I think our score will be
good in Europe.
Low bands were amazing for the great numbers of multipliers available, we
lost a lot of its waiting for the 10 minutes rule and for our poor 160
meters antenna....but it was really possible to work more then 100 countries
on 6 bands.
Band summary:
160: We lost a lot of multipliers, our poor antenna and short windows opening
does not match the 10 minutes rules. We done just a little better then last
year with the same working conditions. We will try to have better ears in
future,
but our QTH on an hilltop sorrounded by woods doesn't give us the
possibility to put on any beverage antennas.
80: Till last year it was very difficult to reach the 100 countries on this
band,
now we are at 115 and we don't use it as running band, almost impossible to
find a frequency free. We received a great help from Fabio IG9/I4UFH lets us
to work new multipliers on his frequency. Franco I4AVG, our 80 meters man
was very tired, but a great time was had by him.
40:Always a great band for us, impossible to listen on our transmitting
frequency, nice
US pile up during the first night, work US pile up on split at 150 QSO/hour
is really a good rate.
20:The best runner band this year. Nice opening in the morning to Pacific
over the long path, and nice US pile up in the evening, better on Sunday.
15:Another very good year for 15 meters, not like 1995 (2300 QSOs), but with
very good opening to east (JA, VK and Asia) and afternoon pile up from US
(zone 5 and 4), only N6AW from the zone 3 during Sunday afternoon when
signals from US were just a little bit stronger then Saturday.
10: Certainly the most captivating band, with short opening to east (VK,
VS6, XX9, VU..), some sporadic E signals from EU, and good African station
on the band.
Weak signals from south America and Carabbean and it was very difficult to
work them
thru the US pile up. Incredible 10 minutes open to US on Sunday, we
immediatly change the runner band on 10, just to log 26 US station from zone
5 only.
What a band....!!!!
Thanks to all who called, and moved from one band to another on our request.
See you on CW.
